Digital Product Passport FAQ
Practical answers about product data, stable QR links, version history, hosting and evolving EU requirements.
What is a Digital Product Passport?+
A structured digital record connected to a physical product. It can provide identity, origin, materials, repair, recycling, sustainability, responsible-operator and regulatory information throughout the lifecycle.
Who can use DPPora?+
DPPora is designed for manufacturers and other responsible economic operators, including importers, authorised representatives and product or compliance teams.
Is DPPora an official European Union service?+
No. DPPora is independent, is not affiliated with the European Commission and does not claim that a passport has been accepted by an EU registry unless an authoritative submission has occurred.
Does every product already require a Digital Product Passport?+
No. Requirements apply through legislation and product-specific rules on different timelines. Obligations depend on the product group and applicable law. DPPora can also be used voluntarily.
Does DPPora submit passports to an EU database?+
DPPora does not currently submit customer passports to the EU Registry. The Commission documents registration workflows, but DPPora publishing is separate from EU registration. The responsible economic operator must complete applicable registration through the authorised route.
What information can a passport contain?+
Product identifiers, category, origin, images, material composition, sourcing countries, repair and recycling guidance, sustainability information, evidence, responsible-operator details and supported regulatory declarations.
Can I import products from CSV or Excel?+
Yes. Upload a CSV or Excel file and map its columns to DPPora fields. Presets for Shopify and PIM software help with mapping; they are not live connectors. Review the data before importing.
Can I connect directly to Shopify or Pimcore?+
Yes. Connect Shopify or Pimcore Datahub, select products and import their details and optional images. Imports are available on every plan, including Free, subject to per-import limits. Imported products remain unpublished. Image processing can make large imports slower.
Why must material percentages total 100%?+
DPPora requires listed materials to total exactly 100% as a platform validation rule. This is not a universal statutory battery-reporting rule; the applicable composition detail and thresholds depend on the relevant requirements.
What are SKU, GTIN, EAN and UPI?+
An SKU is an internal stock code. GTIN is a globally recognised trade-item identifier; EAN-13 is a common GTIN barcode format. UPI means Unique Product Identifier. DPPora keeps the UPI separate from the passport URL.
Does each passport receive a QR code?+
Yes. Publishing provides a stable public URL and downloadable QR code. Customers can scan it with a normal phone camera without an account while the passport is hosted.
What happens when passport information changes?+
The QR URL opens the latest passport. DPPora creates numbered versions and preserves previous published versions as read-only history. Only the current version is editable.
What happens when company information changes?+
Published passports show the latest approved responsible-operator contact information. DPPora separately retains the original publication snapshot and company-profile history for audit purposes.
Can a published passport be deleted?+
Published passports can be marked discontinued, withdrawn, recalled, superseded, end of life or archived while hosted. If a subscription is cancelled, public hosting continues through the paid period, then stops. Workspace data remains private unless the subscription is reactivated or the customer requests deletion. Unpublished drafts can be deleted.
Can a passport include photographs and documents?+
Yes. A primary image can be cropped for consistent display, while supporting images, PDFs and ZIP files can be attached as evidence.
Are public pages visible to search engines?+
Only when the publisher enables indexing. Published QR pages remain accessible by URL, but inclusion in DPPora’s sitemap is controlled separately.
Where is DPPora data hosted?+
The application is delivered through Cloudflare. Authentication, database records and uploaded files use DPPora’s Supabase EU project.
Can I start before every product-specific EU rule is final?+
Yes. Organise currently known product data now and maintain draft or voluntary records. DPPora marks pending schema areas and avoids treating provisional fields as universally mandatory.
Does DPPora offer a customer API?+
Yes. Professional and higher plans include a read/write API for products and passports. API keys are restricted to your organisation and their assigned permissions. Import connectors are available separately on every plan.
Does DPPora support GS1 Digital Link?+
Yes. Every published passport with a valid GTIN can use a standardised GS1 Digital Link path through DPPora’s resolver. The resolver directs customers to the current hosted passport and provides standards-based link metadata. It does not allocate or validate GTINs and is independent of GS1 commercial API services.
Can I use my own branded domain for passport links?+
Yes. Organisations on the Business or Professional plan can connect a dedicated company subdomain. Add one CNAME record and DPPora handles verification, routing and the secure certificate. Published passports with a GTIN can then use the same GS1 identifier path on your domain. A custom domain is optional and is not required to create or publish passports.
Product, batch and item passports+
Create product, batch and individual item passports, each with its own identifier and QR link. Items can belong to a batch or directly to a product. Shared details are copied at creation; later parent edits do not update them automatically. Each published passport uses your plan allowance. Available levels depend on the product category.
Can I verify my GTINs with GS1 in DPPora?+
Yes. Use the Verified by GS1 lookup in the Product identity step to check a GTIN against GS1 records and view available product and licence-holder information directly in your workspace. You can check the entered GTIN without saving the product. Available information varies by GTIN; some results contain only licence information, which does not verify the complete product.
Can GS1 data automatically populate my passport?+
Look up any GTIN and automatically populate drafts with available GS1 product identity and photos. GS1 source fields remain read-only. Publishing requires a matching GS1 licence approved by DPPora. Submit licence evidence in Company profile. Import limits and passport allowances apply.
Is DPPora part of GS1?+
DPPora is an independent service with access to the Verified by GS1 API and is a member of AECOC / GS1 Spain. DPPora is not operated by GS1, and API access does not imply GS1 endorsement or certification. DPPora does not issue GTINs. A lookup does not certify a product, a passport or regulatory compliance.
Which payment methods do you accept?+
Payments are processed securely by Stripe. We accept Visa, Mastercard and American Express. Apple Pay and Google Pay are available on compatible devices and browsers. PayPal is available for payments in EUR, GBP and USD, but not JPY. The payment methods available to you are shown at checkout.
Battery passports and serial numbers
Carbon-footprint, recycled-content and due-diligence information are not required for the February 2027 passport launch. They follow separate application schedules; applicable due-diligence reporting starts in August 2027.
Does your battery need a passport?+
Electric vehicle (EV); Light means of transport (LMT); Industrial, above 2 kWh. From 18 February 2027, Article 77 covers these batteries when placed on the EU market or put into service. The 2 kWh threshold applies to industrial batteries; it does not apply to EV or LMT batteries.
Can one passport cover an entire production batch?+
For batteries covered by Article 77, each individual battery needs a passport. You can reuse the shared model information across those records; a batch identifier alone cannot replace individual identities.
Must every serial number be registered with GS1?+
No separate GS1 registration is required for each manufacturer-assigned serial number used with its GTIN. GS1 Digital Link uses /01/{GTIN}/21/{SERIAL} to express the individual identity. The serial must conform to GS1 rules and be unique within the GTIN. A working link also requires a configured resolver and a matching passport record.
Do we need a passport for every cell or module?+
The Commission-hosted guidance points to the finished, safely functioning battery. Cells and modules assembled into one finished battery do not automatically need separate passports. Independently functioning batteries are assessed separately; integrated systems require a case-by-case assessment.
Can I import a list of manufacturer serial numbers?+
Create up to 10,000 individual draft passports per import. Paste one manufacturer serial number per line, or upload a CSV. Repeat for larger quantities, subject to your plan’s capacity. Nothing is published automatically.
How often must battery lifecycle data be updated?+
Update relevant dynamic data when a status change occurs or is considered. More frequent monitoring can be needed where feasible and proportionate; continuous real-time telemetry is not universally required. Offline battery servicing can be an appropriate update point. New batteries may initially lack use-generated data, but status and applicable performance and durability values must be provided.
Is all battery passport information public?+
No. Public information and restricted information have different audiences. DPPora’s existing controls cover organisation-reviewed authority access to compliance test reports; other restricted access rights await final EU rules. These controls are not EU verification or a guarantee of compliance with the forthcoming access act. Do not publish confidential evidence in the public record.
Does automatic translation ensure language compliance?+
No. Non-language-neutral information must meet the language requirements of the Member State where the battery is marketed. The responsible economic operator must check the required languages and translation accuracy. Multilingual display alone does not establish compliance.
Passport Preparation Service
Can DPPora prepare my passports for me?+
Yes. Our preparation service covers an agreed initial project using the information and serial numbers you supply. We prepare the workspace and drafts for your review; publication requires your approval. Your team remains responsible for accurate information and ongoing updates. The preparation fee and platform subscription are quoted separately.
Do you collect or certify the underlying evidence?+
We organise information and evidence that you supply and identify missing information. Laboratory testing, independent verification and certification are not included. You review and approve the content before publication.
Who updates the passports afterwards?+
Your team, or the responsible economic operator at that lifecycle stage, maintains the required information. Ongoing updates and integrations can be discussed separately; they are not automatically included in the initial preparation fee.
Does this replace a DPPora subscription?+
No. Preparation is a separately quoted service. A suitable ongoing platform subscription is required for the agreed hosting and published-passport capacity.
